Key Word Sign

Key Word Sign consists of a core vocabulary used to communicate concepts and ideas. This core vocabulary is matched to, and derive from Auslan Sign Language.
Key Word Sign uses manual signs and natural gesture to aid communication.
For students who have communication difficulties, Key Word Sign is a simple yet great way to encourage, promote and support their language development.

At Maddington ESC students participate in a Key Word Sign Program consisting of hands on, engaging lessons delivered in a relevant and clear manner. These lessons, along with Aided Communication Boards and Communication Devices, build functional skills and confidence to effectively communicate.

When a student can effectively communicate with peers and staff it leads to, strengthened social skills, problem-solving, and an eased level frustration. Every individual has the right to a voice, and for that voice to be heard.
